Is it Time to Replace Your AC Filter?

Your air conditioner’s filters, just like the other parts of the system need regular maintenance in order to keep the working efficiency throughout the years. Clogged, dirty filter slows down the air circulation in your house and reduces the performance of your air conditioner.

The air conditioner filters clean the air that goes back into the unit, which means cleaner air for your home. Air conditioner filters reduce the amount of dust and allergens, reducing the appearance of lung and breathing disorders. This is why it is very important that you change or clean your filters regularly.

Where air condition filters are located?

The central air conditioner filters are usually located along the length of the return duct. You can find them in your wall, ceiling, furnace, or the air conditioner itself.

Changing the air conditioner filter.

  • Determine what size of the filter you need. Usually your old filter will have the measurements written on its side.
  • Insert a new filter at the place of the old one.
  • For the best air quality, change the air filters four times a year.

Air filters types.

There are a variety of different kinds of filters that you can purchase. The quality of the filter is usually measured by MERV – Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, which can go from 1 to 16. The higher the MERV, the more efficient the air filter is at removing particles from the airflow.

Lower efficiency air filters with a 1-4 MERV protect the HVAC equipment from the buildup of unwanted materials. These filters do not play a big role in the quality of the indoor air.

Medium efficiency air filters with a MERV of 5 to 13 are a better choice of removing small particles from your indoor air.

High efficiency air filters with a 14 to 16 MERV provide the best air cleaning performance. These filters are used primarily in hospitals.

Change your air filters on the regular basis to keep your AC working efficiently, have cleaner air, and save energy.
